TEMPORARY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
TFA is a program is a one time grant to assure that the of immediate basic needs of minor children of eligible veterans are met, food, shelter, utilities. It is not meant to be long term.
At the current time, the Veteran has to be either:
- active duty military with legal custody of minor children in the home or
- a current active member of The American Legion, with legal custody of minor children in the home.
If you feel you may be eligible, please call South Carolina American Legion Department Headquarters at 803-612-1171 so we can send you the application and start documenting the process.
Please assemble the following the documents to send to prevent delays:
- Attach evidence of military service-DD214, VA printout, or official proof that clearly indicate dates of service and the discharge characterization or active duty status (copy of orders);
- Copy of children’s birth certificates;
- Copy of marriage license;
- All current statements, bills, leases, and foreclosure, eviction, disconnection notices to be considered;
- And if applicable, divorce decrees, custody documents, adoption papers, and legal name changes.
Ensure all sections of the application are complete and the appropriate signatures are obtained. Remember that TFA is only available when all other possible sources are exhausted. Documented application dates in the OTHER ASSISTANCE section are very important and will have bearing whether assistance is granted.

The Department Adjutant and or Children & Youth Committee will verify all documentation and may contact you for further documentation and/or information.
